On behalf of the entire Springwood School family, we welcome you to our website! I’ve served here as Headmaster since 2012 and have seen firsthand the legacy Springwood carries in the Greater Chattahoochee Valley area.
Springwood provides a strong academic education, but beyond that we emphasize values that are so necessary for true success in today’s ever-changing world. One of these primary core values is the commitment Springwood makes to provide a college preparatory education in a Christian environment.
Having been in existence since 1970, Springwood benefits from decades of success. Due to the academic accomplishment and faculty development, Springwood has recently won the AISA President’s Award three straight times in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.
We continue to see our current families and students that come from local and international locations embrace the culture and believe “greater things yet to come. ” We desire to prepare the next generation of leaders so they are well-equipped for their life’s work. At Springwood, our students graduate with so much more than a diploma!
After exploring our website, we encourage you to visit our campus and see what Springwood has to offer. I would enjoy the opportunity to meet you. We Are…Springwood!
Rick Johnson has served for over 35 years in independent education. Since arriving at Springwood, he has helped the School realize enrollment growth, developed programs for sustainability, earn the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Blue Ribbon award each year, and win academic and athletic state championships as well as multiple region/district titles. Additionally, Springwood received the prestigious AISA President’s Award three consecutive years (2014-17). Under his leadership, the School has set numerous records, including an all-time high average ACT score for a graduating class in 2017 along with scholarship offer records the past three consecutive academic years. This includes the highest ever of $3.2 million in 2017, an average of over $100,000 per student. The School has also developed an international program that now includes an on-campus residential facility. Currently, over 20 students representing eight different countries attend Springwood. Along with welcoming international students to Lanett, he also leads a mission trip to the Dominican Republic annually.
In his role as head coach for the junior varsity and varsity girls basketball program, "Coach Johnson" has led the Springwood Lady Wildcats to a prominent position in the AISA. Accomplishments since 2012 include back-to-back region championships, four straight Final Four appearances, a State Runner-up finish, and the AISA 2A State Championship with Springwood’s first-ever undefeated basketball team (30-0) in 2016. Springwood received high praise from the SAIS review team in 2016 and was unanimously recommended for renewed accreditation through 2021. Mr. Johnson is a certified chairperson for SAIS accrediting teams and also serves as Treasurer of the AISA Headmaster’s Association.
Mr. Johnson arrived at Springwood following ten years as Headmaster at Trinity Christian School in Dublin, Georgia. From 2002 to 2009, Trinity’s enrollment grew from 300 students to consecutive years of over 500 students, including an all-time high of 511 students in 2008-09. Mr. Johnson initiated several programs that enabled the School to build new facilities valued at over $6 million. He also led TCS in the initial pursuit of dual accreditation with the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wisconsin, and a Master’s degree in management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama. His high school basketball teams have won eight different state titles, and he’s been honored as Coach of the Year at the National, State, and Region levels multiple times.
